Structure of the new study system

Aalto University School of Science and Technology has a two-cycle degree structure. Students who begin their studies after 1st of August, 2005 are to first complete a Bachelor of Science degree, and only after that the Master of Science in Technology, Architecture or Landscape Architecture. The complete extent of Master’s Degree is 300 credits. The B.Sc. (Tech.) degree will take three years, and the credit required for the degree will be 180. The credit required for the higher degrees (Master of Science in Technology, Architecture and Landscape Architecture) will be 120, which will take two years of full-time study to complete. Thus, the nominal duration of Master’s degree is five years.

New Bachelor degree structure consists of general studies and several modules of advanced studies. General studies include mathematical and scientific subjects, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and information science. Studies also include foreign languages. Studies for a Master’s degree consist of modules, which include major, minor and optional studies. Major studies for Process Control and Automation students consist of process measurements, controlling and simulation. Minor subjects of Process Control students are usually from some field of process industry, such as pulp, paper, chemical or material processing industry. The topic of Master’s thesis is chosen to fit within the major subject.

The students who choose Process Control and Automation as his/her major are able to include in his/her studies, not just process controlling and simulation, but also extensive studies in computer science and electrical engineering. Students can choose courses from Computer and Information science, Information Processing science, Software Technology, Telecommunications Software and Applications, Interactive Digital Media, Contents Production and Usability Research.
