Department of Biotechnology and Chemical Technology

The Department of Biotechnology and Chemical Technology at Aalto University aims to have a major influence on the development and generation of chemistry-oriented industries in Finland . The department is one of the top runners in three fields: applied chemistry, chemical industry technology and biochemical technology. The department’s activities also include important aspects from the interdisciplinary fields of materials science and environmental protection.

The Department of Biotechnology and Chemical Technology educates the best undergraduates in Finland to become the top graduate engineers in chemistry (M.Sc.). Postgraduate studies at the department lead to the degrees of Licentiate of Technology, and Doctor of Technology or Doctor of Philosophy.

The department’s research activities combine basic sciences with engineering sciences. Research is concentrated on the development of chemical and biochemical products and processes. Most of the research is carried out in close co-operation with industry, research institutes, and other universities and polytechnics. Our research has resulted in several important national and international product and process concepts, in addition to an ever-increasing number of scientific publications.
